この近代的な問題を「共感」の論理で解明し、全体的効用主義の重商主義を批判した社会科学の古典。
出版後、カントやヘーゲル、ロシア・ナロードニキ、日本市民社会論者等に影響を与える。
生前にはそれぞれ特徴のある版が６版まで出る。第２版（１７６１年）でヒュームの疑問に答えた他、 幾つか修正。第３版（１７６７年）で「言語起源論」を追加。第４版（１７７４年）で副題が入る。 第６版（１７９０年）で２巻本となり、良心と世論との対立やシステム主義をめぐって大改訂・増補がなされる。 「はしがき」で『法学』を完成したいという意志を遺す。 |

スミスはその生涯にグラスゴー大学教授、大陸旅行付き家庭教師、スコットランド関税委員
の職に就く。最初の大学教授在職中（１７５１−１７６４年）に法・政治学と修辞学・文学
を講義。本書は法・政治学の１７６３−６４年の講義を学生が筆記したもので、後にＥ．
キャナンが編集。当時学生が筆記した講義は教授の許可なしに流通されることがあった。 この法・政治学講義の一部が後の『国富論』となる。残りの「正義」の部分を完成しよう と準備していたが、関税職と健康上の理由で果たせず、未刊。準備していたすべての原稿類 はなくなる前に焼却される。 |

これもスミスは刊行しようとしていたが、果たせず、未刊。スミスは１７４８−５１年にエディンバラで
修辞学・文学について公開講義をし、それに手を入れる形で１７５１−６３年のグラスゴー大学教職に就
いている間ずっと修辞学・文学を講義。 古典古代以来の修辞観を批判して近代的な修辞論を本格的に、しかも先駆的に展開。 社会科学のコミュニケーションとしてレトリックを考える。「言語起源論」（１７６１年） と同じ内容部分が含まれる。最近ではフーコーがスミスの「言語起源論」に注目していた。 |

であれば、彼に捧げられる予定であった言われる（１７７４年１２月１６日、ケネー没）。重商主義
を批判して文明の市民的資本主義社会を研究。直接の執筆期間だけでも８年、自由主義の構想を抱い
てから２０数年、ペネロープの織物を織るようにしてようやくのことで出版。親友の哲学者ヒュームの
「でかした、すばらしい！」の賛辞に迎えられて世に出る。時の政府の予算案に取り入れられたり、
首相Ｗ．ピットから「私どもは貴方の生徒です」と言われたりして、大成功を収める。 生前にはアメリカ、デンマーク、ドイツ、フランスで翻訳される。日本語訳は明治１５−２１年に わたって、石川暎作と嵯峨正作の訳で『富国論』として出される。 ５００部印刷され、値段は１ポンド１６シリング。当時のロンドンの労働者の半年分の生活費に 相当する金額であった。我が国にはその５００部の内、約１０パーセントが集められている。 後のマルサス、リカード、Ｊ．Ｓ．ミル、マルクス等によって、批判的に摂取されていく。 |

また関税委員職で得た知識と経験を生かして決定版とするために、大幅に増補。
この版を残して私は死んでいきたいとまで思いこむ。 増補は主として重商主義政策批判と原蓄国家財政批判に集中。索引が付く。 現在のグラスゴー版『スミス全集』はこの第３版を底本としている。この版から体裁が 変化して８折版、３巻本となる。部数１０００、値段１８シリング。 第３版とは別に、旧版の購入者のために『初版と第２版に対する増補と訂正』という 冊子が出されている。それには増補分のすべてと修正の大部分が含まれている。 第３巻巻末に「道徳感情論 第４版」の広告あり。 |
